Mad-ras!

A few days back, Dinamalar splashed pictures of a couple passionately kissing each other, causing an uproar here in Singara Chennai. Another picture was of a girl with a bottle of beer in her hand. And honestly, I dont see anything wrong in that. This is invasion of privacy, in its most ugliest form. Apparently the Commissioner has issued a notice ordering a three-month closure of the hotel. The police claim that the hotel was not licensed to serve liquor in the first place. And for a fact, I know that the hotel has a pub ( Leather Bar) as well as a disco ( Pasha) both of which have been in the business for longer than I can remember. I guess their response has more to do with containing the voices condemning such obscene incidents than anything else. And just a few days back, The Deccan Chronicle came out with a photo of the Commissioner of Police, Chennai's son happily partying away late in the night. That pic was titled something like "One rule for Policemen, one rule for the rest"

I have tried to get some news links on all these, and have been searching on the net for quite a while now...with no luck. Will add them on soon.

Back to the story. Coming in the wake of recent comments by actress Khushboo, ( about pre-marital sex) this prompts us to think along the lines of invasion of privacy, misuse of the freedom of the press and what next ? Khushboo was just just expressing her views on 'pre-marital sex in Chennai'. She said that all the taboo about pre-marital sex was a thing of the past, and people wouldnt mind marrying even if they know that their partner was not a virgin. As expected, public activists and politicians blew the issue out of proportion and made some 'news grabbing' out of it.

I have to admit, Chennai is still conservative. But we could do without such uninspired and unimaginative journalism.

Its a sad reflection of the "cultural policing". If India wants to portray itself as a vibrant democracy, then individual freedom needs to be upheld.

Yes! But the sad thing is that this time, the press is to be blamed and not the usual suspects - the police!

The culture police can police the actions but not the intentions.

Despite of all the bragging about the richness of our culture and traditions, ours has also been a tradition of denials, arrogance and ignorance as much as the other prevalent cultures. It is all about putting contentious things under the carpet.

Thus, I beleive that even though our cities are not conservative in thoughts anymore, they want to portray an image of being one.

The press or media in particular caters to the wants of its audience more than its needs. The crime sections on TV and the news papers have increased. We have moved from times of understanding and contribution to suspicion and ambitious intentions. The society is clearly reflecting itself in media.

In our society Gods are supposed to act as per the devotee's imagination of the God. We as a society are not in a position to accept our Gods unconditionally, leave alone other fellow beings.

Even though such things still occur in India... There is a huge fuss made about it... Especially by the media... All this because people want some sort of gossip... Some people breed of such stuff... Sickening to say the least!

Sambar : Bangalore is a fun place da...seriously! I had a great time when I was there!
Joe: Thanks man!
Nirm: Though I agree to what you are trying to say...I cannot accept the fact that the lower/ middle class people are insecure. There are some who are conducive to change..and there are some who think a society cannot function like this. The sooner they adapt themselves to the change, in whatever way they can..we can go ahead.
But the point is...In this particular incident, the media is to blame for this and not the section of people you are talking abt!

Nicely written, Ram. Totally agree, Chennai is a conservative place, agreed. As you've said it is just the two faced journalism and police officers with nothing better to do than to go after clubbers is sad state of affairs. Hee Hee I keep saying that I am gonna say no more on this topic, but can't keep quiet:)
